The Bee’s Knees is a weekly feature wherein I ramble about all the lovely little things that are inspiring me this week.

The 7th of August was my sixth wedding anniversary. My husband, Josh and I celebrated by taking a little overnight trip to the Mission Inn in Riverside. This was our first vacation away from home since our babymoon in Palm Springs three years ago. It was also our first night together away from our daughter Eleanor. I know, we need to get out more!

We chose the Mission Inn because I had recently read a book in which a portion of the story was set there (thanks Betsy!). The descriptions of it were so lovely that I was thrilled to discover that it was an actual place.

The Inn is an historic building first built as a 12 room adobe boarding house in 1876 and over the years was expanded to a 239 room Inn. It’s a fairly famous Inn, and has been visited by 10 presidents and was the site of Richard Nixon’s wedding. You can read more about it’s history here on the Inn’s website.

It certainly lived up to my expectations. It was really lovely. And I’m definitely not alone in finding it’s beauty inspiring. As Josh and I roamed the grounds we ran into three different couples having their engagement portraits taken and a wedding party having their portraits done before their ceremony and reception at the Inn later that evening.

You can read more about our anniversary trip tomorrow on my personal blog Making Me Cranky.

The Inn was awesome (in the awe-inspiring sense). Good choice! Definitely want to go back. I heard it is done up real nice-like during the winter!

Wow, LOVE your amazing photos of The Mission Inn. My parents both raised in Riverside, CA and met as young adults in 1936. They attended many functions in the Music Room. Visiting, dining and and staying occasionally at The Mission Inn has been a big part of my family’s history. Christmas, a magical time to visit and stay, but when the bougainvillea is in full bloom like your wonderful photos show, just absolutely beautiful! I’m looking forward to viewing more of your photos. Susan in Fresno, CA :-)
